Guitarist/composer John Miley coined the term
“Breathlanes” in the mid 1970s, and has since found it useful in defining and
guiding an outlook toward creating an atmospheric, organic quality in modal
improvisation. To the outside world, “Breathlanes” first appeared as the title
of a 1992 release of a collection of solo electric guitar improvisations.
In time, it became the name of a distinct band of musicians, and later, the
name of a musical collective of shifting personnel. Each represents a different
aspect of a common approach that, over time, has become more and more recognizable.
